R/Hangamuva Maha Vidyalaya was started by philanthropistsof the area Mr.H.M.Punchi Mahathmaya and Mr.Molligoda Mohottalage Kaluhamion third of August 1860. At the beginning school was a small hut built with bamboo ant cadjans and ther were only 12 student. The first building of the school was constructed by Mr. H.M.Punchi Mahathmaya and in 1865 it became a govermment school. Mr. Pichoris the first Principal of the school was appointed in1869. They were only 15 male student at that time. In 1870 school had another building and they werw two section for girls and boys under two teachers.Mr.Don Charlis Niriella Jayasooriya was appointed as the principal of the school on first july 1898 after the resignation of first principal Mr. Pichoris. They were 68 students at that time. The school was not held wen principal was on leave.Mrs.Liyoni ,Mrs.L.M.Fernando and Mrs.Perera served in this school for short period of time in 1900. After that resignation of principal in 1990 school was administrated by village headman. Mr.Karolis Appohami was appointed as principal on 30 th November in 1901. He served as the principal for a long period. In 1920 one of eight students who sat for the government examination got through the exam.In 1927 there were 242 student. On 12 th June Villagers and students celebrated the birthday of his majesty the king of England. On 4 th February 1948 the villages and the children celebrated the independence day , by offering flower and lighting lamps. Also they was a perahera from school to sri Sumanarama viharaya. Mr,Hetti Wikrama Arachchi was appointed as principal on 26 th February in 1951 after the period of Mr.Keraneris Appuhami. Ther was and art exhibition on 26 th September 1954 and director of Education participated as chief guest. There wer many exhibits made from coconut husks, Coconut leaves, coconut shells and Eakles.For the first time students participated for the a sports festival held in Colombo on 22 nd February 1955. Then school was promoted as a government high school.There was a development of the school during this period and there wer 682 students and 20 teachers in 1957.On her first centenary in1969 there wer 1504 students and 37 teachers in 1987 R/Hangamuwa Maha Vidyalaya was appointed as the main school of the area and Mr.W.B.Udasena was the principal. During the period 1860-1996 the school has been administrated by 16 principals. Through this period the students educated from the school have worked in the village and in the country and also presently engage in various fields.At present there are Art and Commerce subject are taught at Advance Level. The Number of students successful at government examinations are increasing every year. The present staff consist of 43 teachers with the principal Mr.A.M.Wimalarathna. I wish all the success too the school and to the students in the future.
